Prince of Wales History:

The hotel was opened in 1866, with Thomas Dixon as publican during its first year of operation. T. Gorman had the licence for the next couple of years and in from 1869-1901, Patrick Larkin became proprietor.

Larkin had other business interests. For example, in 1868 he is described as a corn and hay dealer and a commission agent at 774 and 776 George Street. An 1882 advertisement shows him as produce, wine and spirit merchant at several places including the Prince of Wales Hotel. In 1901, he is listed as managing a produce store and refreshment rooms at 1-5 Gipps Street.

In 1902 Harry Walters (formally of the Grand Hotel) became the publican. He was there until 1918.
